Clothing Terms & Definitions
Hems
A hem (often called hemline) is the finished edge of a piece of fabric, commonly found on the bottom of garments or sleeves.
- Straight Hem: Our most common hem. The bottom edge of the garment is one uniform length, without curves or variations.
- Round Hem: The bottom edge of the garment is rounded, with sides that are slightly shorter than the middle.
- Traditional Button Down Hem: The bottom edge of the button down is rounded (like a Round Hem) and slightly longer in the back than in the front.
Seams
A seam is a stitched line where two pieces of fabric are joined together to shape a garment.
- Sleeve Seam: The stitched line where the fabric of the sleeve is attached to the body of your shirt.
- Side Seam: The stitched line where the front half of your shirt is attached to the back half of your shirt.
Cuffs
Pant Cuff: The finished edge at the bottom of the pant leg, which may be folded, buttoned, or elasticized.
Sleeve Cuff: The band at the end of the sleeve (usually at the wrist), which can be buttoned, fastened with cufflinks, or elasticized.
Waistbands
Bottom Waistband: The band of fabric at the waist of pants, skirts, or shorts, helping secure the fit. This may include elastic, buttons, or drawstrings.
Sweatshirt Waistband: A fitted or elasticized band at the bottom of a sweatshirt that provides a snug fit around the waist.
Collars
A collar is a piece of fabric attached to the neckline of a garment like a shirt, jacket, or dress. It serves both functional and decorative purposes, adding structure and style to the neckline.
Necklines
A neckline is the top edge of a garment around the neck, which can vary in shape and style depending on the garment.
- Crewneck: A round, close-fitting neckline that sits at the base of the neck. It is one of the most common neckline styles, often found on t-shirts.
- V-neck: A neckline shaped like the letter "V," dipping down in the front to create a more open look. The depth of the "V" can vary from shallow to deep.
- Scoop: A wide, U-shaped neckline that dips lower than a crewneck. It creates a more open and relaxed look.
- Hooded: A neckline that extends into a hood, typically attached to sweatshirts, jackets, or casual tops.
- ¼ Zip: A neckline with a short zipper that extends about a quarter of the way down from the collar. It allows for adjustable coverage and is commonly found in athletic and outerwear styles.
- Slit Neck: A neckline with a small vertical slit at the center front, adding a subtle opening. It can vary in depth and is often used to create a relaxed or decorative detail.
Alterations
What is an alteration?
An alteration is a change or adjustment made to a garment to improve its fit, style, or function.
Visit our Alteration product pages to explore the specific alterations we offer.
What can I alter?
We alter most clothing items including Shirts, Tank Tops, Button Downs, Sweatshirts, Pants, Shorts, Skirts, and Dresses.
Check individual Alteration product pages for specific alteration options.
What can’t I alter?
Our tailors are experts, but some items and alterations still require an in-person visit.
Garments like multi-layered dresses (many evening gowns), suit jackets, outerwear, knitwear (most sweaters), swimwear, and pieces with embellishments across the area being altered are more complex and best handled in-person.
If the garment you’d like to alter is not listed on our general Alterations page, we do not offer alterations for that item.
Similarly, if the specific alteration you’d like for an item is not listed on that item’s Alteration page, we do not offer that alteration.

How can Crop It For Me alter my clothing without seeing how it fits on me?
Crop It For Me sends each customer a Ship Kit with pinning Instruction Cards to ensure accurate, customer-provided pinning for alterations. We promise, you don’t need to know a thing about pinning or sewing to successfully pin your clothes.
By guiding you through pinning your desired adjustments directly on the garment, we can make sure your clothes are altered perfectly—no in-person fitting needed!
How do I pin my clothing for an alteration?
Use the provided Instruction Cards and safety pins from your Ship Kit to pin your items exactly where you'd like them altered. Check out our Pinning Guides for extra help.
Accepted Fabrics
We alter cotton, linen, polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex, Lycra, elastane, flannel, denim, and blends of these fabrics.
Prohibited Fabrics
We don't alter knit wool, knit acrylic, cashmere, or any crochet-style loose-knit fabrics. These materials unravel during the alteration process and often require re-knitting, which is not a service Crop It For Me provides.
Items with Pre-Existing Embellishments
Certain items with pre-existing embellishments (e.g. sequins, embroidery, beading) cannot be altered due to their delicate nature or design. We don't alter items with embellishments that cross or cover the area being altered.
However, if the embellishment is not covering the area being altered, we can still make a change (e.g., if there is embroidery on a shirt's chest but not on the hemline, we can still shorten the shirt).
Shirt Alterations
Shirt Definition
A shirt is a garment worn on your upper body (e.g. t-shirts, polos, henleys, graphic tees, or jerseys). A shirt can have long or short sleeves (or anything in between).
Select Shirt if:
- Your item has a plain hemline with no zippers or buttons crossing the hem.
- Your item's sleeves extend past the shoulder and cover some or all of your arm. (If your item's sleeves don’t extend past the sleeve seam, you should select Tank Top).
Shorten Length
This alteration will shorten the length of your shirt.
Once we shorten your shirt, we can re-hem it with either a Straight Hem (a straight, uniform hem) or a Round Hem (a curved hem that is longer in the middle and slightly shorter on the sides).
You will pick the new length of your Straight or Round Hem when you receive your Ship Kit.
Alter Sleeves
This alteration will shorten or remove the sleeves of your shirt. We can alter shirts with short or long sleeves.
Select Shorten Sleeves if you want to shorten your shirt's sleeves up to the existing sleeve seam.
Select Remove Sleeves if you want your sleeves shortened past the sleeve seam, essentially turning your shirt into a tank top.
You will choose your sleeve length (or tank top strap width) when you receive your Ship Kit.
Scrap Scrunchie
Scrap Scrunchie is only available when shortening the length of your shirt. After we shorten your shirt, we’ll use the leftover fabric to make you a matching scrunchie.
You must remove at least 2 inches from your shirt’s length for us to have enough fabric to make you a scrunchie.
