Pinning a Round Hem
Rounded hemlines are longer in the middle and slightly shorter on the sides.
To pin your item for a Round Hem, you will need to mark two lengths: (1) the Bottom Length and (2) the Side Length.
03
03
Determine your new Bottom Length.
Choose either option A or B below to find your perfect Round Hem Bottom Length.
A Put on the item you're altering.
While standing up straight in front of a mirror, fold the bottom hem of your item up and inward to test Bottom Lengths. Continue testing until you're satisfied.
Once you've chosen the Bottom Length, hold the spot with your finger as you release the folded fabric and grab one of the Shorten Length - Round Hem safety pins from your Ship Kit.

Wear a pair of shorts or pants that you'd likely wear with your altered item to help you pick the best length.
Raise your arms while testing lengths. What looks good when relaxed may be too short with your arms up.
B Use an item you own as a guide.
Look through your closet for items similar to the one you're altering. Pick one with a hem length you'd like to copy.
Once you've picked your reference item, lay the item you're altering on a flat surface, then place the reference piece on top.
Align the shoulders of both items before marking the new Bottom Length for your Round Hem.

If you don't own an item with a round hem, you can still use one with a straight hem for inspiration. Use the length of the straight-hemmed item you like to decide your Bottom Length and then make your Side Length slightly shorter.
04

04
Mark your desired Bottom Length with one of the Shorten Length - Round Hem safety pins.
Place the safety pin parallel to the bottom hem on the item's midline at your desired length.

The safety pin only needs to pierce one layer of fabric to mark the new length. It does not need to hold any folds in place.
05

05
Mark the new Side Length with the other Shorten Length - Round Hem safety pin.
Secure the safety pin parallel to the bottom hem on the item's side seam.
Your Side Length should be shorter than your Bottom Length. The larger the vertical distance between safety pins, the more dramatic the curve in the hem will be.

The safety pin only needs to pierce one layer of fabric to mark the new length. It does not need to hold any folds in place.

06
Test the Bottom and Side Lengths you pinned.
After placing both Shorten Length - Round Hem safety pins, fold the hem of your item up and inward at the pinned Bottom and Side Lengths to double-check your choices.
Adjust and repin if needed.

Confirm both pins are parallel to your item's original bottom hem.
